Is Racism a Part of the Simpson Experience?

So let's put aside our little personal issues--school, homework, the dryers all being taken, our noisy neighbors--and talk about an issue that has come to the forefront on Simpson College campus: racism.

Two months after the publication in The Simpsonian of a story saying, subtly but surely, that no one should sit with the international students, another issue had occurred this past week.

According to reliable sources, an international student was yelled at to "go back to your country" by what I would define as brainless people who hardly deserve the right to express themselves. It is hard to believe that people can still make such comments, especially in the United States of America, the only country in the world to pride itself on being composed of all races and nationalities.

No one in the United States is fully American--except for Native Americans. We all have diverse origins due to our ancestors: German, British, Spanish, Chinese, Egyptian, Brazilian, Kenyan, and many more. It is not necessary to remind you that Americans have fought endlessly against slavery and racism with great minds such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Nat Turner leading the way. If for no other reason, then simply out of respect for those who died for this country, we should all respect each other.

And yet, we continue to have instances like the one that took place last week. And unfortunately, racism is not the only issue on this campus. People are still the targets of homophobic, sexist, or bigoted comments.

A "March to End the Isms" will walk through campus and Indianola to raise awareness about these issues. Join them March 30 at 3:30 pm for the rally.

Students and Pfeiffer!

It is not rare to walk around campus and hear sarcastic comments about how the food at Pfeiffer is "delicious", "great", "absolutely unforgettable." Sometimes, those comments are not sarcastic at all, but they mostly refer to bowel movements.

After almost a year in charge, Chartwells has brought a change in the food service, and students have noticed it. Most students understand that the food is good enough for a college cafeteria and that it is hard to cook for more than a thousand students each day.

What do students really think about Pfeiffer food? Here is the answer.

Students don't really complain about the quality of the food, but more about the variety of choices. A majority of them are asking for healthy or vegetarian choices.

So while students may have their differing opinions on certain aspects of Pfeiffer food, one conclusion remains universal: they want more variety of food!

Tribute to the Storms' Basketball Teams

The 2011-2012 basketball season was truly exciting thanks to the two great teams, men and women! Boys and girls both made it to the tournament this year, and defended our colors proudly.

Students and The Simpsonian

Oldest college newspaper of The United States, The Simpsonian offers news on a weekly basis to students. With a large variety of articles, the newspaper covers all happenings on campus. 

However, some students believe the newspaper is biased, used by the administration as a marketing tool to attract prospective students. 

Editors , on their side, fight every day to have more freedom in their coverage, and ask for more transparency to help students understand how the administration works and where their money goes!

The newspaper is looking for a change: reducing the number of pages, and focusing more on their online content. But what do students want to see in The Simpsonian? Are they really reading the newspaper? The answer is here: 

So students want to see pictures, read gossip, and have fun with comic strips. But some of them still want to read about the increasing cost of tuition (that will be a subject of one video), sports of course, finances, and arts. 

However, they think The Simpsonian is boring, too classy, and doesn't necessarily take students' opinions into consideration.

The Simpsonian is, above anything else, the students' newspaper, and it is their only opportunity to really express their disagreement (or content sometimes) to the people in charge. 

In order to evolve, The Simpsonian should reflect more students' life, ask them what they want to see and read, and should allow them to participate more often. LIKE WE DO!
